Lady Horn Softball season is now underway!

The 2008 season started Thursday February 14th with a tournament in Pearsall. The Lady Horns’ first game was against Freer and the Lady Bucks’ had their gloves full, as the Lady Horns went through the line-up three times in only two innings. The Lady Horns racked up 20 runs on 13 hits. Jessica Kerr, pitching for the Lady Horns, shut down the Lady Bucks’ with five strike outs. Kerr pitched a no hitter to start out the season.

In the second game, the Lady Horns faced the Comfort Lady Bobcats. This game went seven innings, with the Lady Horns winning by a sum of 6-0. The Lady Horns tested the Lady Bobcats with their bats, hitting the ball all over the field. The Lady Horns got 8 hits, one of them being a 2 run homer in the 3rd by Maggie Ham. Pitcher Maggie Ham pitched a no-hitter, with 18 strike-outs.

The third game played that day by the Lady Horns was against Poth (ranked 6th in state). This would be a very interesting game. Poth scored one run in the first inning, then two more in the second. In the top of the third Lady Horns answered the question “Can we hit and score?” The Ladies tied the score 3-3, but Poth still had to bat. The Pirettes were not giving up; they sent the Lady Horns a message in the bottom of the 3rd. In the fourth they would put another run on the board, making the score 6-3 Pirettes. In the top of the 5th the Lady Horns rallied, putting 4 runs on the board. This would be the final score: 7-6. Lady Horns Win!!!! The Lady Horn stopped Poth from scoring their last two at bats. The Ladies had eight hits to Poths’ three. Kerr had one strike out; Ham retired four ladies with strike outs.

The Championship game was played Saturday against Pleasanton. The Horns took the win 9-1 in 5 innings. The Ladies had 12 hits, one being a grand slam, hit by Maggie Ham. Ham pitched and allowed only 2 hits with 11 strike outs.

Seniors leading the team this year are #2 Monica Lopez, #4 Cameron Swinney, #6 Amber Guitierrez, #9 Jessica Kerr, #14 Courtnee Holt, and #20 Claudia Chapa. Juniors are #1 Alice Ronchetti, # 3 Megan Hardwick, # 5 Lacey Gee, and #7 Savannah Franco. Sophomore #11 Kayla Krietsch and freshmen #00 Salina Chapa and #10 Maggie Ham complete the line-up.

The Lady Horns received a team plaque for winning the tournament and Maggie Ham was named M.V.P. All-tournament players were Monica Lopez, Jessica Kerr, Lacey Gee, and Megan Hardwick.

The Lady Horns would love to see you cheering them on at their games.

Longhorns can't keep up in second half

Rest to aid Ray, GW in playoffs
Both football teams coming of a bye week

(Excerpt from Callertimes)

George West coach Gary Davenport gave the Longhorns even more time off. Part of the reason were the number of injuries the team has had to deal with, although it didn't help senior quarterback Travis Locke, who is out for the season with an ankle injury.

"We let the kids off all week," Davenport said. "We only practiced one day, Thursday. My reason is that they've been hard at it for six days a week since Aug. 6. They probably needed to get away from us. We just wanted them to relax and get their feet back under them. We'll see Saturday how we do."

Regardless of the outcome, Davenport said the team needed a break.

"We sure did," he said. "The bye is something that coaches have differing opinions on. Some think if you don't practice the other team is going to get ahead. That's the paranoid part of us. I've had some experience with this and found that what works best for the teams I've been involved with is just to get away for awhile. Get away from the field house and get away from me."
